Yes it can do both if it gets to hot. Remember the old Excaliber Cobras. That was their downfall as they had under car exhausts and several of them burned. I saw a couple that a car hauler was taking through here and one had burned all the way to the back of the seats and was so hot the steering coluum was just a pile of molten metal in what was the floor.

Try the heat shielding and if you aren't showing the car, use a good type of header wrap as thet will lower the temperature quite a bit.
