Binary editor is widely used and has a lot of knowledgeable people who can help you. I have been using TunerPro. This was originally written for GM, but now supports Ford. It is very inexpensive and lacks nothing that I have found. I never used BE, so I cannot compare.

I found a used A9L on Craigslist, for 50 bucks.
