It was the first way, like two of the six USRRC car ran them - not recessed I had in mind

Don't recall seeing that exhaust system before, but it's definately a pretty cool look - I like it. You could probably downsize the pipes a little from standard dual sidepipes size and even gain a slight bit of road clearance. Go for it.
