It's so true that the guys with the replicas (like me) keep them clean and nice, and the real ones are often ratted up and raced. Every year I go to Laguna Seca for the historics, where my brother-in-law is a mechanic in the pits, and we see a ton of real ones up close. I think every one has the paint blasted off ahead of the rear wheel, and most have dents and rivets in odd spots to hold things together. Really cool.
