Bill,

This won't help you if you absent-mindedly step out of the car and touch the pipe, but for my passengers that I think might have a difficult time getting in or out of the car, I made roll-out heat shields out of welder's blanket and installed them in the door sill with a couple of snaps. They just roll up out of the way tucked between the seat and sill when not in use. Others have done this as well - I got the idea on this forum.
