Default OT - oil pressure gage in newer cars

I'm on my second Mustang GT and curious about the oil pressure gage in newer cars. They never show any variation in pressure between cold and hot, low and high rpm. If I believed that they would have to be some sort of constant flow/pressure pump.

How do these things work? I'm suspicious they have a threshold down around 10 psi and anything above that they read at mid-scale without any variation. Basically no better than an old idiot light.

Am I right?
