If you are only getting 10 mpg with a 302 variant there is something off on your tuning. I have a Keith Kraft 331 stroker in my FIA and generally get around 20 mpg, unless I do some highway cruising with the .67 OD gear. Normally run around twisty country roads in 3rd and 4th. 446 HP at 6000 rpm dyno chassis reading with 326 rwhp. AFR 165 heads.
