We do media blast the caliper to remove the existing coating. But unless the customer specifically requests the caliper halves be split, we leave them alone, and that's what we recommend to them. We were told by Subaru that if you split the halves, it affects the seals.
HSV and Porsche also paint their calipers joined with the bolts torqued, as do other well known caliper refinishers such as
PowerStation
