My problem was not the orientation of the belt but the b%$#&y belt tensioner. I could not get the tensioner to retract when fitting the belt. It turned out that the tensioner appeared to have been crushed during the assembly process and I was reluctant to use excessive force which I have now done and it works a treat. It works freely and I will keep and eye on it when I get the engine started. There is no tight spots at all and must have just spragged up in the manufacturing. I thought for a moment that it must have been a stretchy belt which some of them are.
