Tim, I did some checking on this subject as a little bit of reassurance now might potentially save a lot of $$$ later.
George Reid's excellent reference book High-Performance FORD Engine Parts Interchange has no mention of a difference in crankshaft end play between auto and manual transmission configurations. Same story in a couple of other SBF/Windsor books. Internet searches showed figures of 0.004" to 0.008", 0.004" to 0.009" and 0.004" to 0.010" but no mention of differences between manual vs. auto transmissions configs.
No comments posted by engine builders, surprisingly.
I'm happy to assume no difference.
