Yes, the gauge and sending unit cannot be separated so have to replace the entire assembly. The sending unit is a gas-filled bulb so most likely the gas leaked out. I had to replace mine - the leak was slow as the temp reading got lower and lower over a few weeks until it finally didn't register at all. In addition to the above recommendations you might also try APT Instruments (Home). I bought a matching Smith's clock from them at a very good price and good service. I just checked their website and they have an announcement that they will no longer distribute Smith Gauges and are liquidating existing inventory. If they still have an oil temp gauge, maybe you can get it at a reduced price.
