Not a LS (302W) but similar situation. I have a heater unit under the dash and originally thought it would be a good idea to put a simple ball valve in to keep heat out of the cabin. I tried this after the first summer running the car and it immediately got very hot with the valve closed. Opened the valve and all was well again. Figured that the cooling required the circulation and stopped worrying about it.
