The 385 Series timing cover has channels on its backside which circumnavigate the water pump holes in the front of the block. This way, should a leak occur there the water will enter the channel in the timing cover which then directs/dumps the water out outside of the cover rather than allowing it to seep further inward and dump into the crankcase.
