There are two types of hood props on the 427: The early prop pivoted on the hood and locked into a box on the wheel-well.
The later style (also on the FIA) had the prop pivot from near the firewall and fit into a T-slot on the hood.
Which do you have? If the latter, if you put a little more (or less) bend in the prop, it will "stick" into the slot to prevent the sort of problem that you describe.
