Long ride, long gun. Always a handgun - don't leave home without it. Nothing wrong with a handgun and a carbine of choice with a fair quantity of loaded mags and spare ammo.

I carried my tool bag with most of the tools that I used to work on the car. Fix a flat or what ever the can is called. Flashlights. A few spare parts. Appropriate fluids.

Water, food, blanket, rain poncho and normal comfort accessories.

I've broken an engine while travelling but otherwise the only failure was an ignition switch.
