I did a couple of things and both worked well. I used the ferrule hook as you said but had to be careful to get the hole in the mat just right. In the other car I use two strips of double sided tape and it stuck to the mat and carpet very well and lasted for over a year before I had to change it. I also have rubber backed mats with small dimples on them that seem to hold them in place well as the dimples stick into the carper but not very far.
