Yes, you want the distributor to trigger the ignition at somewhere around 10 -15 BTDC, so place the engine at that point, drop in the distributor so the rotor points to number one on the cap.

Nip up the bolt so you can still move the distributor by hand. Connect a non-dial back timing light for MSD.

Start the engine, run the engine above idle to warm up a bit, check the timing at idle, then at 2500-3000 rpm.
