My recollection was that aftermarket US coil spring manufacturers (Alden, TCI, Afco etc) used to put a color code on the top (flat ground) part of the spring to designate spring rate.

I know auto manufacturers do put their OEM unique color codes usually on the side of the coil spring about half way down.

I'll really have to dig through old file boxes to find the info now.

Or when things get back to normal go over to a local dirt bike shop. They have a spring tester/lbs per inch measurement set-up.
