Pat, originally it would have a similar setup to a "mechanical" oil pressure gauge, with fuel all the way to the gauge.
It is now of course recognised as too dangerous to have a tube with high octane in it piped through to the back of the dash. Hence, present day fit would use an isolator mounted on/near the firewall, with - I think - water used from the isolator to the gauge.

Isolator would look something like this, with fuel to one side of the diaphragm and water from the other side to the gauge. Could be wrong about the water, but it would be something that obviously is not flammable Name:  Fuel pressure isolator.jpg
