Yep, Colorado Denver area counties in 2010 or so did a sweep through residential neighborhoods looking for motor homes (primarily, boats too) registered out of state and looked determined through records of ownership and residency those that were using the Montana registration system to avoid sales tax and registration fees. Several owners were cited for tax evasion and had to pay the original sales tax, taxes and registrations in arrears to the date of purchases plus some healthy fines. Made the local Denver news. I know of at least one new Ford GT registered thusly.
