From your description it sounds like you have Electric popper door release.
The Solenoid in the door pulls the cable for the latch and a spring loaded popper (optional) opens the door 1-2 inches.
The solenoids are pretty universal in size and operation. I'd look closely at the control box for any telltale part numbers or manufacturers info.
Full kits are pretty cheap though.

The solenoids come in different pull strengths based on latch resistance. 15lb, 45lb, etc... I'd look at your installed one before ordering replacement.
In any case you will have pull the interior cover off your door for access.
Hopefully the cable that pulls the latch is broken. Easy fix.
