Unless serviced on some kind of regularity over the decades, defective operation can develop into failure real quick especially if the car is suddenly driven a lot or used extra agressively. I witnessed an original 427 Cobra with a hydraulic clutch system that had not been serviced enough on a tour with us that finished failing out on the road trip we were on that day.
