One of the old-wives-tales about American Express was that Walter Cronkite had a "black" card - before there was such a thing, I think. He had cards for most of the "crew" that worked for and traveled with him and charged everthing on Amex. His monthly bill could approach $1M. And that was back in the 60s... They keep trying to get me to upgrade to a platinum card but I really don't get anything that I care about over the gold card (I also have one for my wife, and we charge almost everything to it.) I used it for business travel until the 90s - I also had a Diners - but started really using it in the mid 90s. I've racked up over 500K "points". Need to start using them since I don't think they survive me.
