I have 72 Spoke Dayton wire wheels on my 5.0L Austin-Healey (345 hp at the crank)and have had no problems with them. The weak point is generally not the spokes, but the splines themselves. I'm pretty easy on them, no clutch dumps or burnouts, so that helps. Dayton makes "dental drive" wheels that are more likely to stand up to more aggressive driving. On a Cobra, the original style "Cobra-laced" wheels will look better than the standard style wire wheel. Many complain about how hard they are to clean, but I've found cleaning with Meguiars Hot Wheel cleaner for chrome wheels makes it pretty simple. You'll also need to figure out how to mount the spline drives on your car. Good luck with the transformation, they do look nice on a 289 car.
