Yes, self etching primer is a priority for painting aluminum. But I think I would lean towards leaving it bare aluminum. It will weather some with time but still be impressive as hell. Vapor honing is now the hot thing for restoring weathered aluminum parts - so whoever rebuilds it down the road in the future always has that option for restoring its fresh appearance.
