The wrestling shoe is a good idea cost-wise. Many autocrossers use them.

I've got big fat feet (13eee) in a rather close foot box. Topsiders work, but for long drives where some heel support makes it more comfortable--I use my Pilotes--which you can actually walk in. Simpsons for serious stuff.
