The Ford 302 has the oil pump in the front of the engine, and using a front sump pan means you have a shorter distance from the pickup to the pump. The CANTON road race pan should come with a new pickup designed to work with the front sump setup and has baffles to keep the oil in the sump area. The RR pan takes 9 qts of oil, you will have to re-calibrate your dip stick just to be sure. The only other thing to check is to be sure the pump isn't sucking air from above the oil level.
