Michael, I replaced mine with the current rubber style, I'm surprised you even found a leather type?. I made an aluminum tool on my lathe that makes contact with the metal portion of the seal, it presses evenly as you screw down the pinion nut.
If you like, I will lend you the tool to use or you can make a copy.
