I am not as elloquent as some on the thread. I sent the following to both my State Assembly and State Senate representatives:

Please vote against SB 708.

I don't believe that attacking the older cars will have any significant effect on the smog in California.

It is my belief that the backers of this legislation are trying to come up with a tidy 10: O'clock news bite, to satisfy their financial backers, rather that taking a reasoned approach to clean air in our state.

If some new legislation is to be proposed, why not start with a ruling that all pick-up trucks, vans and suvs have to meet the same emissions as the automobiles with which they share an engine? This ruling, retroactive to the same time frame that automobiles were smog equipped, might have an effect, if automobile emissions are the real culprit on the air quality in our state.

The vast number of these vehicles and the poor economy that they deliver are, in my opinion, a much greater threat to our clean air than older cars, most of which only get driven to car shows on weekends, and are normally kept in an excellent state of repair.
