Thanks to all for your input. It seems to be a relatively straight forward task. I am pretty optimistic that the problem is a dry seal. The rear end had very low mileage when I installed it and the car has been sitting for about 15 (yes 15!) years.

I now have the desire and the time thanks to our economy to get everything completed. I should have it off to the painter and hopefully on the road by late may.
