Boy.... a lot of old memories here.... but do you remember when you were getting gas at the "filling" station you usually asked for it by the gallon and not by the dollar?

"Yes sir, gimmie 5 gallons please!"

And then watched as the attendent filled up the glass jug on the top of the "pump" to the 5 gallon mark and gravity fed it to your car.
