I'm not sure what you mean by "application". However, if you plan on road racing you will need either a 3 layer suit or a 2 layer suit and wear nomex underwear. those are generally the rules by both SCCA and NASA.

I don't remember for sure, but I think a 3 layer gives you about 12 seconds in a full fire.
