Tom,

The only thing I can think of is the shaft itself. As you know it goes all the way through the steering column and down to the rack and pinion. If you remove the two bolts and nuts where the steering column attaches to the short shaft that comes out of the rack you can pull the shaft back through the inside of the car (you also need to loosen the bearing on the left side of the frame that stabilizes the steering rod).
