On my FFR I engraved and rivited a VIN plate to the frame with the number matching my manufacturers certificate of origin (my FFR serial number). The CHP took a look at it, decided to use that as my VIN, then engraved and attached an official-looking blue "Replacement Identification Number" plate to a frame cross-member. What he really wanted to do was attach it to the driver's door sill somewhere, but the FFR body doesn't have enough room to do this. He also stressed that I should engrave and attach one or two more VIN plates to various places in the car just to be safe.

There was a guy on ffcobra who went to the CHP without any VIN plates of any kind on his car. The CHP went nuts looking for one, including getting the car on a lift and looking underneath. Then they dropped it off the lift and damaged the car. Last I heard he is still waiting for his reimbursement check.
