is it possible the linkage rods were bumped when putting the trans back in, where it might be 1/2 way engaged into reverse or part way in another gear or something? Can you get it into reverse, move the car backwards a bit, and then go into 1st and move forwards, and then back to neutral again? I've seen two Toploaders get stuck 1/2 way into other gears and then cleared by using reverse and back out again. Make sure all linkage rods are definitely centered in neutral and start over... just another thought.
