Mike, somewhere along the line the design changed but the manual didn't. You need the adapter plate for the hookup to the tank hose and the vent. It is made of steel so I would use a good paint that is fuel resistant so it doesn't rust. You need at least 1 gasket which should have come with the cap. The gasket is made of rubber so you could make one. The adapter goes in first, then the gasket, the aluminum lemans plate is next, then screw on the cap. If you want to make 2 gaskets you would put 1 between the body and the adapter also.
