The valley tray prevents hot oil from splashing onto the bottom of the intake. But more importantly, it catches any debris that may come off your valvetrain, and prevents it from falling down onto the cam and through the crank / rods. Mine paid for itself when it caught valvespring pieces and held them safely away from any moving parts.
