Always avoid chrome anything that seals oil with a gasket unless you bead blast the surface that the gasket seals against. This will give the pan, valve cover or whatever something to "bite" into the gasket.

As for the bottom of the bellhousing, scribe a line tangent with the very bottom of the horizontal section of the bellhousing and saw off--not flame cut--the flange. Don't forget the engine plate.
