Back in the Jurassic era, when we restored Mustangs (even before we restored Shelby Mustangs), we'd always clip the mounting studs off the back of all emblems.
We'd carefully trim 3M emblem adhesive tape to fill the depressions in the back and have a uniformly flat surface. Then we'd stick the emblems to the car, lining them up by eye.
That way, we avoided drilling holes through our fresh paint. We also avoided problems with the posts being in the wrong place. Once we started that, the lack of headaches was refreshing.
We had no problems with emblems staying in place. The same cannot be said for our experiences with mounting posts.
