Chuck, if it makes you feel better...Smiths have no markings whatsoever. I was playing with my voltmeter today, cogniscent of your post and looked for markings. They must have been "optional"
They do have a diagram showing the dashlight socket in the middle and make a point of showing +12 and ground right and left. Do a quick battery hook up to validate what you see.
