I did the same thing you did - what broke was the inner stub axle. It ended up costing about $2K.
I had to replace the left rear caliper, disc, new chrome moly stub axles from CWI (who are out of that end of the business now, I believe) and posi unit.
I don't think you can say what should or shouldn't happen when you make a "hard launch"....stuff happens when we play.
