572 Stroker Power
I just finished a 572 stroker based 460 motor. I am curious about the power and torque I should expect of this motor. I am new here and have enjoyed reading the many amazing insights this family has expressed regarding the 385series Ford motors.
Here are some specifics about my motor: 1) 850 cfm Mighty Demon Carb with 1 " spacer 2) Weiand Stealth CJ intake port matched to cyl heads with plenum divider knife edged. 3) Factory iron CJ heads(DOOE-R) with new undercut stem valves, hardened exhaust seats, thermactor bumps removed from exhaust ports and mild pocket porting on both the intake and exhaust pockets 4) 254/264 duration at 0.050" lift with .605" lift using 1.8 ratio roller rocker arms--hydraulic flat tappet cam. 5) 11.25:1 compression ratio 6) 1 3/4" primary full length headers to 3" collectors and 3" exhaust pipes. Any guesses on HP and torque at given RPM's? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Don |
I'm assuming a 4.5" bore and a 4.5" stroke with this combo. Engine Analyzer Pro is showing about 550hp @ 5500 rpm and 600 lb-ft at 4000 rpm.
Your heads and cam are a real bottleneck to this engine. There's just not enough there to feed 572 ci. I have a feeling that with a set of Kaase/Ford Racing SCJ heads and a large duration roller cam, you could see 700-750hp pretty easily. |
Thanks for your input. Right now, my budget limits me to the conservative hydraulic flat tappet cam and DOOE-R heads. Down the road, however, I will be looking at an upgrade of the intake, heads and cam. What specs of a roller cam would put this motor in the 700-750 hp range? What kind of cost would be involved by switching to a roller cam and lifters?
P.S. The bore and stroke are 4.5"x4.5" as you guessed. Don |

I've built Windsors and I've built FE's, but I've not built a 385 series engine yet. Tom's suggestion of hopping onto the 460 forum would be a good one.
Roller cams and lifters will probably add $350-400 to your bill, but it's all for a very worthy cause. Lots of duration will help that engine breathe, but it will also move your powerband up higher. I assume you're putting this in a Cobra, so the light weight will help you here. My guess is that a cam with a duration at .050" in the 270/280's range with a lift of about .700-.750 will get you there if the head flow is good enough to back it up. When you get to the cam-purchasing point, you can give Keith Craft a call and he could point you in the perfect direction. I know all about budgets...I had to make a lot of shortcuts on my 428....but they're fun just the same. :) You can always save your pennies and add on later! |
Actually, this motor is going into a restored 1977 F-100 SWB 2WD truck. I do have a dream of having a powerplant of this size in a Cobra in the future. Thanks to each of you who responded.

Also looks like you are using every bit of cfm of your carb, but unless its strickly a race engine, I wouldn't worry about it too much. When we watched the A/F - BSFC when pulling over a carbs cfm, they tend to go rich a little. http://www.caliwampus.com/Dyno/DonRedden.jpg |
Thanks for the neat dyno graft. I will "uncork" this stroker beast ASAP with the use of deep breathing heads, lg single pane intake and large duration roller cam as soon as possible.
