I just went through the process, I bought a car with a Texas title, listing the car as a 1967 Ford. You take the car and title to the DMV. Drive to the inspection station outside the office. The inspector will verify the vin number and at that time they will inform you it is a kit car and will be called a Specially Constructed vehicle (SPCNS). Take that paperwork, Park the car, remove the license and go inside and pay all fees, you will receive a 90 day red sticker so you can drive the car. Prior to going to the DMV go to the DMV web site and print out everything about SB100. Very few employees get to do the SB 100 paperwork and you might have to be armed with the correct information. After you pay your fees ask to be assigned a SB100 sequence number, The employee will have to make a telephone call to obtain the number. Do not leave without the number. After you get the number wait about one week to get the sequence number form from DMV. Call and make an appointment with the BAR for the smog check. You will not pass or fail the smog test and it is free. They will place a sticker on the firewall and the car will never again be inspected for smog. Take that paperwork back to the DMV and they will issue you the plates. If you do not register the car using SB100 then smog the car to the year of the engine, meeting the standards of the engine year and smog the car every two years. Be smart, get moving now and get your sequence number and use SB100 before the numbers are gone for the year. This information only applies to cars with an out of state title.
