It helps get around the fender bulge if you adjust your side mirrors outward to show the lane beside you, which is how they're supposed to be anyway.

I adjust mine so that I have to lean way over to see the side of my own vehicle. That way I can see a vehicle beside me either in the mirror or in my peripheral vision.

The center mirror is to see what's behind you.
