I think the number is cast on the underside of the intake ports.Since there is little difference between most 2v heads (as well as M heads), if you are trying to determine if it is a 2v or 4v head the early 2v heads and the 4v heads have either a 2 or 4 cast in the upper corner between the intake flange and the valve cover lip.
