Two things, any chance the choke set is on a bit and holding the thottle open? Check the screw on the right side to see if it is getting the link.
Second if the car did not pop out of second before and does now you may have throw problem on the shifter but it sounds more like a bad set of gears in the trans. Hope I am wrong on that one.
