Also, any avid readers out there, there's a wonderful explanation of the aluminum/aluminium thing in Bill Bryson's new book "A short history of nearly everything."
The short story is that the original word was alumium. But the American scientists thought aluminum was easier to say or something to that effect. So then the English scientists said that for consistency sake and ending element names in "ium" (rather than "num"), they would just add an i before the um.
I'm sure you all feely infinitely enlightened! I sure do...
