Charlie, I'm not sure which alternator you have so I can't help with that. The MSD 6AL can be wired as follows.

large black wire to ground
large red wire to batt + or circuit breaker on firewall
small red to wire # 128 (ignition)
white wire is not used
green and purple twisted pair to distributor
small orange to coil +
small black to coil -
wire# 132 to tach output on the 6AL

you don't need a ballast, you will not use wire #138,185,186,187, or 189. you can tape them off.

If the distributor is an MSD it will plug in direct to the 6AL twisted pair. If it's a Ford it will have 3 wires, orange, purple and black. The black is not used. The green from the 6AL goes to the purple on the dist., the purple from the 6AL goes to the orange on the dist.
