If you're talking about anything small enough for brake lines, in many states it's illegal to use a non-DOT approved hose in a brake system. It's not because they would fail due to pressure - they don't meet the "hang the caliper from the hose test". You can now buy DOT rated brake lines from Earls and Russell. They're reinforced where the hose goes into the fitting.
