More wonderful back lane cruising Sat, then the big she-bang Sat night, were I was honored to give one of several eulogys to my recently lost friend Bob Olthoff. Won the big drawing courtesy of WP Motorsports/Dynatek racing, who have teamed up SPF and Tag-Hurer in promotion, and my name was pulled from the hat, so I came back with this nifty Tag-Hurer Formula One watch!!! Cool, huh?
So many contests, car judging, braking, loudest cars, (I went 114 dB just off idle) four corner weighing, etc, but most of all, renewing old friendships, it was just a great weekend. But come Sunday morning, the rains had come, so we three set out for the 500+ mile run home, for about the first half in rain, my new cloth top letting in an occasional drop of water, the mists and ruts making for real caution on the back roads, but as we nearing the Carolinas, the sun came out, and dropping the top, I kept up with the two formidable strokers. Earlier in West Va, coming back on the I-77, was surprised by a toll booth, so unlatching my five points to dig my wallet out, handing the toll girl my buck and change, I had to catch up with Mike and Jim, so I blasted out, down the curves, trying to steer with one hand, latch up with the other, then with my other hand grabbing at dollar bills flying around my cockpit! Of course, we cruised each rest-stop coming home, blipping and double-clutching in a glorious symphony of spent 93 octane.
Rolled into my garage, getting 18.3 mpg, and traveling almost 1600 miles without drama, but with great excitement. The trusty Great Stroker now has at least 75,000 miles on it, and my son and I are tracking it and his Porsche this next week at a SC track. The good times just won’t quit.
My sincere thanks to all who worked so hard to put this event together, and make it so hugely enjoyable.
